A broad term for humans afflicted by the Cordyceps infection. Infected develop over various stages with different features. Regardless of their stage of infection, they are hostile and will attack uninfected humans and creatures they detect, whether by sound, sight, or echolocation. In earlier stages, host subjects are generally more humanoid and become more inhuman as the infection progresses. If the host body dies, spores are emitted and spread to find new hosts. This means that the infection is transmissible via bites, scratches, or even breathing in spores.

Joel is a ruthless operator in the black market underground. Self-reliant and ingenious, he becomes hardened after a traumatic loss. Through his journey, he finds the strength to become a father figure and fight for a better future for himself and Ellie.
Five years later, Joel has settled in Jackson, Wyoming along with his brother Tommy, Tommy's wife Maria, and, of course, Ellie. While he doesn't regret the decisions he made five years prior, he soon will have to confront the consequences of his actions.
When we first meet Ellie she is a 14-year-old girl who has never known the "normal" world prior to 2013. Therefore, Joel not only becomes her transporter – but a guide to the wider world. She is precocious, resourceful and capable. Whether it's sharing a good pun or overcoming a crisis, her wit and cleverness prove invaluable.
5 years later, we reunite with Ellie in The Last of Us Part II. She has grown more confident, outspoken and strong. When a traumatic event rattles her and her community, she sets out to seek vengeance. Although she has matured, she must grapple with not only her Infected and human adversaries but also the emotional toll of her actions.
Tough, capable and arguably more cutthroat than her smuggling partner Joel, Tess overcame the struggles of the brutal world around her to become a savvy strategist and negotiator. Her leadership and physical prowess made her a respected figure in the Boston QZ. While she subscribed to the dog-eat-dog mentality of a hardened survivor, she remains loyal, courageous and ultimately proves to be selfless in her support of Joel and Ellie's journey.
Bill is the final survivor of his town, staying behind as other residents either evacuated or succumbed to the infection. His practicality empowered him to fortify his domain against outside threats, whether human or Infected. His isolation has led to loneliness and paranoia – although he'd be the last person to admit that.
A capable and athletic survivor, Henry was a young child when the catastrophic events of 2013 ravaged America. Above all, he prioritizes his role as the older brother and protector of Sam. Throughout the years, he and his brother are forced to grow and make tough decisions. They encounter their biggest challenge when their quarantine zone is abandoned, forcing them to search for a secure homestead.
Sam only knows the world post-2013 – and this shaped his pessimistic and emotionally distant worldview. His older brother Henry's perpetual oversight and protection have resulted in Sam's fear that he will not survive in the future – and also catalyzes him to help wherever he can. Despite the bleak state of the world, he still manages to express childlike joy, whether it's coveting a scavenged toy robot or finding moments to be playful.
When Ellie first encounters David, he is both unassuming and friendly, despite his gaunt and haunted appearance. He is a charismatic leader to his loyal group. Beneath his seemingly pacifist approach to life, he hides a darker side.
An ardent member of the Fireflies, Marlene has been at the forefront of the struggle to overthrow the military's oppressive rule in the quarantine zones. Despite her experience supporting the rebellion, she remains gentle and compassionate. Her career in medicine cultivated her belief in the value of saving humanity – which she would pursue at any cost.
We meet 16-year-old Riley in The Last of Us: Left Behind. Riley is fiercely independent and selfless, but the harsh realities of the world have also forced her to survive by any means possible. Although she is distrustful of new people, she is loving and outgoing around those she trusts, particularly Ellie, her best friend.
While he shares his brother Joel's ruggedness and grit, Tommy's impulsive, compassionate and hopeful personality sets him apart. After a stint fighting with the Fireflies, he meets his future wife Maria and her community in Jackson, Wyoming. With this new direction in his values, he looks to create a meaningful, rich life despite the bleak circumstances.
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie and Joel join Maria and Tommy's township. He continues his personal mission by contributing as a patrolman, leading the community with Maria, and acting as an extended family for Ellie.
When we’re introduced to Abby in The Last of Us Part II, she is a leading member of the WLF. Despite her reputation as a formidable fighter, her stoic and imposing presence hides her vulnerability. Previously, she and her father were part of the Fireflies until a tragic incident left Abby on her own. She must now grapple with her identity and find meaning and purpose beyond her need for justice.
The eldest daughter of a fundamentalist Seraphite mother, Yara is outwardly unquestioning about her faith. When she meets Abby, she finds the strength to stand for her own beliefs – and assume the role of protector for her younger brother, Lev.
Despite the dangers of expressing his identity in his fundamentalist Seraphite community, Lev forges his own path forward, training to become an adept warrior. He is loyal, austere, and true to his values. Previously sheltered from the outside world, Lev's worldview broadens significantly when he meets Abby.
Jesse is a natural leader of the Jackson community with a strong moral compass. He is driven by his desire to protect those in his life, including Ellie and Dina. His combat experience and commanding nature make him an elite patrolman.
Dina is Ellie’s strong-willed, optimistic best friend and confidant. Like Ellie, she was also orphaned young and forced to learn to survive on her own and become self-sufficient. Her strong moral compass and outspoken nature brings out the best in Ellie.
Hunters are a particularly brutal faction that scavenges, loots, tortures, and hunts down unsuspecting "tourists" to secure supplies. Despite experiencing years of oppressive rule under FEDRA in the quarantine zones, they refused to submit to orders from the Fireflies after rebelling, ultimately taking over their own lawless city.
United in resistance against the authoritarian military and the anarchistic Hunters, the Fireflies are a militia in pursuit of the cure for the Cordyceps infection. While their aspirations are noble, they are resourceful and determined to further their agenda by any means necessary.
A ruthless faction based in Santa Barbara, California, the Rattlers roam the town and coast, enslaving any individuals they encounter. Their treatment of their captives is incredibly extreme and depraved, especially in comparison to other factions.
As their name would indicate, this group of survivors inhabiting the snowy Lakeside Resort have gone to extreme lengths to survive -- even violating one of humanity's taboos. With a shortage of supplies affecting every individual in America, the Cannibals are a perpetual threat to travelers and the surrounding communities.
Established prior to the catastrophe that ravaged the United States in 2013, the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) oversees the quarantine zones. Their authoritarian security and containment policies are enforced by military and civilian draftees. FEDRA often has to contend with supply shortages, sieges by the Fireflies and other factions, and the ever-looming threat of further outbreaks.
In response to the devastating horrors they witnessed since the collapse of the country, the Seraphites isolated themselves, shunning the faithless "Old World" and developing a deeply traditionalist, xenophobic, and insular community. Their patrollers are identifiable by the scars that extend from the corner of their lips to their ears and their long, dark raincoats. They show no hesitation in torturing outsiders and heretics. They are the primary opposition to the "heathen" WLF militia in the battle for territory in Seattle.
The Washington Liberation Front (WLF) is a militaristic community led by a former marine. Regimented and disciplined, they are one of the better organized militias, communing in the Seattle stadium and offering now-rare amenities like cafeterias, libraries, and classrooms. In their pursuit of stability, their energy is also focused on reclaiming the surrounding Seattle quarantine zone.
Smugglers are survivors from various walks of life who make their living sneaking and moving contraband, people, and supplies past the oppressive military, especially in and out of quarantine zones.
First stage of infection.
Runners are the fastest of the Infected classes. While they are considerably weaker than other late-stage Infected, their tendency to attack in hordes make them notoriously dangerous. They are marked by smaller initial growth of fungal spores and blood gushing from their orifices.
Second stage of infection.
After 2 weeks to a year, Runners develop into the second stage of infection: Stalkers. They demonstrate more independent hunting behavior, hiding in darkness and shadows before viciously attacking their prey.
Third stage of infection.
After a year post-infection, individuals progress into Clickers. At this point, the fungal growths have completely overtaken their bodies, rendering them blind. To overcome their sightlessness, Clickers use echolocation to navigate and locate prey, and their increased strength makes them lethal combatants in close quarters.
Fourth stage of infection (Dry climate).
As individuals develop into Bloaters, their eyesight further deteriorates, and their speed is significantly reduced. Their tank-like strength is significantly increased, and the organic growths on their bodies serve as armor, which can be broken off and used as a spore-emitting projectile.
Alternate fourth stage of infection (Humid/wet climates).
While smaller in comparison to the Bloater, Shamblers are equally terrifying in their own right. They are known to break from their typically slow gait and burst into a sudden sprint to capture their prey. When threatened or dying, they will emit toxic spore clouds.
Unique late-stage infection.
The strongest of all Infected types, the Rat King is composed of several Infected enveloped by a Cordyceps fungus matrix. It is known to emit spores, throw virulent spore projectiles, and charge at its prey.
